In an untimely and unfortunate blow to the Indian T20 side, KL Rahul has been ruled out of the South Africa T20 series due to a side strain. The swashbuckling Indian opener, who finished behind Jos Butler in terms of runs in the recently concluded Indian premier league was all set to captain the side before the injury ruled him out of the series.
In Rahul’s absence, Ruturaj Gaikwad is all set to open the innings with Ishan Kishan as India chase a world record 13th straight T20 win against a rather vulnerable South African outfit as they look to build their squad for the T20 world cup later this year
It’s also understood that Rahul’s injury has been a recurring issue which forced him to miss the Sri Lanka series earlier this year. Rahul’s injury has put his England tour on hold as India look to win their first series in England since 2007 under new captain Rohit Sharma.
Along with Rahul, Kuldeep yadav, who was all set to return to the team after a rather long hiatus has also been ruled out as he sustained a finger injury while batting in the nets. The NCA will assess the injury of both players and provide an update on the same.
In the absence of KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, who was impressive on his captaincy tenure for the delhi capitals is all set to lead the side for the first time in international cricket. Hardik Pandya, who led Gujrat Titans to their maiden IPL title has been named vice captain for the series and the selection committee hasn’t named any replacements for the two injured cricketers.
“Hard to accept but I begin another challenge today. Gutted not to be leading the side for the first time at home, but the boys have all my support from the sidelines.Heartfelt thanks to all for your support.Wishing Rishabh and the boys all the luck for the series.See you soon” read his official twitter handle after he was ruled out
