The Narendra Modi Stadium left Indian cricketers astonished when they first visited it for a match. The sheer grandeur of the stadium and vast capacity made them wonder about the surreal feel this stadium can offer when in total capacity during matches. This truly is one of the most significant achievements of the Gujarat Cricket Association. They have deployed everything to perfection to make this world-class and rightfully the biggest cricket stadium in the world.
When was it Inaugurated?
The spectacular stadium was inaugurated by Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India. The inauguration was on 24th February 2021 during the India and England test series. It was specifically held before the 3rd test between the two teams in the series. The stadium previously was called the Motera stadium but post the renovation has been renamed the Narendra Modi Stadium. Check out some of the top matches played in this stadium from the website.
Overview of the Stadium
The Narendra Modi Stadium is spread over a vast area of 63 acres, and it has a seating capacity of 1,32,000 spectators. Previously the Melbourne Cricket stadium had the highest seating capacity with 90,000 spectators, and the Narendra Modi Stadium easily surpasses this tally. The total stadium area is around 2,38,714 square meters, which is close to 32 Olympic-sized soccer fields put together!
The stadium has a huge parking space for 3000 cars and around 10,000 two-wheelers! The innovative drainage system of the stadium is another major positive point as it promises that water from the outfield shall be drained out and the match can be restarted after 30 minutes of heavy rain!
The entire stadium has as many as 11 cricket pitches! The pitches are made of black soil and red soil, making it the only stadium in the world to have the same soil used in the main and the practice pitch. Furthermore, they have replaced the traditional high-mast floodlight with shadowless LED lights as part of innovation! This makes sure that day & night matches are played here with a new experience altogether!
It is interesting to note that the Gujarat Cricket Association has not only focused on cricket but other sports such as hockey, basketball, football, and more. Therefore, they have made an in-stadium sports enclave for all these sports so that youngsters can also be encouraged in such varying sports! Check out pictures of the stadium from the website.
